The basic idea of introducing SoC into electric devices is to integrate more components into the same piece of silicon to reduce size and cost while enhancing performance. |
SoC in Embedded System
An embedded system is usually defined as a dedicated computer system designed for one or two specific functions with its software and hardware structure configurable. And you can find more definitions as below.
- An embedded system is a controller with a dedicated function within a larger mechanical or electrical system, often with real-time computing constraints. It is embedded as part of a complete device often including hardware and mechanical parts. – Wikipedia
- An embedded system is a dedicated computer system designed for one or two specific functions. This system is embedded as a part of a complete device system that includes hardware, such as electrical and mechanical components. The embedded system is unlike the general-purpose computer, which is engineered to manage a wide range of processing tasks. –Techopedia
- An Embedded System is one that has computer hardware with software embedded in it as one of its important components. - Others
- 以应用为中心,以计算机技术为基础,且软硬件可裁减,适应应用系统对功能、可靠性、成本、体积、功耗的严格要求的专用计算机系统。 --国内普遍认同
A SoC is can be employed in an embedded system to replace the MPU and its peripherals, in order to reduce the size, as shown below.
